The Board of Trustees
SCIE is an independent organisation, registered as a company limited by guarantee and registered as a Charity. The Board of Trustees is responsible for the governance of the organisation.
The function of governance is to ensure that an organisation fulfils its overall purpose, achieves its intended outcomes and operates in an effective, efficient and ethical manner. The trustees are responsible for setting the strategic direction of the organisation, they are stewards of its assets, upholders of its values and its ambassadors.
SCIE may have up to 15 trustees. Three trustees are nominated to the Board by the Secretary of State for Health (including the current Chair). One trustee is nominated by the Welsh Assembly Government and one by the Northern Ireland Assembly. The Board of Trustees is responsible for appointing trustees.
The Board currently meets in London about six times a year and Board members are expected to give about one day a month to SCIE. From time to time Board meetings are held outside London. Board members are appointed for three years.
Board members will have their expenses paid (including any personal assistance costs) but SCIE's charitable status means that it is not possible to remunerate board members except in exceptional circumstances.
